Zhaoqing Helping Hand Home for the Elderly
In response to the shortage of subsidised care and attention places in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Helping Hand Zhaoqing Home for the Elderly established in 2000, providing a new and affordable option for the elderly.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust fully funded the construction of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Helping Hand Zhaoqing Home for the Elderly. Helping Hand operates and manages the Elderly Home on a self-funded basis. It was established in 1998 with the approval of the Guangdong Provincial People's Government. The Guangdong Provincial Civil Administration Office awarded it 'Grade A' accreditation as a social welfare organisation. The first non-profit, entirely foreign-owned care home in Zhaoqing, offering high-quality professional elderly care services. The commencement of operations in 2001.
The elderly home is situated next to a golf club in Baitu Town, Gaoyao City. It is a peaceful location surrounded by fresh air and lush mountains, with a pastoral landscape ideal for relaxation and recovery. The home is 40,000 square meters in size, with a building area of 15,000 square meters, and can accommodate over 200 elderly residents. It is designed and built in accordance with Hong Kong standards for elderly care facilities. The main structures include a nursing department, a dining section for the elderly, "Dementia Wings" for seniors with cognitive impairments, an administration building, a dining hall for the elderly, a guesthouse for visitors and family members, the "Qing En Ge" restaurant, a large comprehensive hall for seniors and volunteer groups, and staff dormitories.
MILESTONES
Groundbreaking ceremony held in April 1999
In 1998, the Elderly Care and Nursing Home was established with the approval of the Zhaoqing Municipal People's Government, as well as the Guangdong Provincial People's Government and the Provincial Department of Civil Affairs. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in April 1999.
The Opening Ceremony was held in October 2000.
The Opening Ceremony of our Elderly Home was jointly officiated by Mr. John Tsang, the Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, senior officials from the Zhaoqing Municipal Government, Mr. Lawrence Wong, CEO of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and Mrs. Johanna Arculli, the Chairperson of Executive Committee, Helping Hand.
The care home has been operational since 2001 and continues to serve the elderly community today
After the full operation of our care home, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust once again provided support to our home, allowing us to build a new guest house. This enables more residents' families to enjoy comfortable rooms in a very convenient location and reasonable cost during visiting their loved ones.
The Dementia Wing has been set up in 2006
“Dementia Wing”, which is specially set up dementia-friendly environment for the residents with dementia in our Zhaoqing Home.
In 2014, the Hong Kong Government began providing support to elderly individuals on waiting lists for care services.
The “Pilot Residential Care Services Scheme in Guangdong” was implemented in June by the Hong Kong Government. Our “Zhaoqing Home for the Elderly” was one of the residential care homes operated by non-governmental organisations of Hong Kong in Guangdong, provides an option for those elders who are on the Central Waiting List for subsidized care and attention places to choose.

The Hong Kong Helping Hand Association started operating nursing homes in Hong Kong in 1985. The Zhaoqing Nursing Home is run by a cross-professional service team from Hong Kong, which provides training and support for different levels and professions of the nursing home, especially nursing staff, which is conducive to talent development. It also introduces Hong Kong's existing operating and management systems and service models, draws on operating experience, and improves service quality.
The medical team consists of professional doctors and nurses who meet national standards and regularly communicate with the Hong Kong medical service team. The resident doctors and nurses also regularly host health lectures to impart health and hygiene knowledge to the residents.
The welfare staff of the institution and social workers from Hong Kong jointly plan and organize a variety of cultural, social and recreational activities that are beneficial to the body and mind.

The purpose of the Association is to try to meet the needs of Hong Kong's elderly for accommodation, nursing and other aspects as quickly and effectively as possible. In order to adapt to the rapid changes in society and the changing expectations and needs of the elderly, the Association is always ready to deal with new problems, implement new concepts and try different working methods.
